Myrrh trees are native to East Africa and may grow up to 3 meters tall. If you cut the bark, the tree exudes a red-brownish resinous gum, called myrrh. When in contact with the air, the gum hardens. The hardened gum is taken to France to be steam-distilled into a thick, viscous essential oil.
Myrrh is among the oldest herbs. In ancient Egypt it was used it to soothe joint problems or gastro-intestinal conditions. It is mentioned several times in the Bible as a precious gift.
The soothing and nourishing myrrh is especially valued in meditation mixtures, preparations for dry skin, foot creams, aftershaves and facial oils for mature skin prone to wrinkles.
