The tropical clove tree produces three different types of essential oils: clove leaf oil, clove stalk oil and clove bud oil, which is the most precious of them. The bud oil is the most valuable and complex of these. The scent is more intense and harmonious than that of the leaf or stalk oil. Shortly before the flowers open their heads in full bloom, the buds are harvested. Their oil has a strong, sweet and spicy aroma, and is used as popular cooking oil in Africa and Asia. The oil is high in eugenol and is widely used in oral care products and massage oils. Clove oil is slightly anaesthetic, warming and stimulating.
