Certain
smells lift our spirits
We would like to highlight another significant effect of essential oils: the influence of scents on our mood. Whenever a scent is transmitted—consciously or unconsciously—through the olfactory mucosa in the nasal concha, it reaches the olfactory brain, a component of the limbic system responsible for processing emotions.
It is the seat of our emotions and “communicates” with other centers in our brain, such as the center for emotions and the centers for short- and long-term memory. A “feel-good scent” is often linked to personal experiences. When we are happy and smell a scent, that smell lingers in our “olfactory memory” after some time. As a result, the same scent can later evoke a feeling of happiness.
The Effects of Essential Oils on the Mind
The essential oils of orange, bergamot, lemon, grapefruit, mandarin, and lime have a relaxing effect and promote joy, cheerfulness, and optimism. Cinnamon and clove provide a sense of security. Swiss stone pine and pine evoke the feeling of a walk in the woods. Rose, neroli, jasmine, ylang-ylang, patchouli, and clary sage help combat anxiety. Chamomile and lavender generally have a calming effect.
From our wide range of natural room sprays and essential oil blends, we’ve selected four that can help promote a sense of calm and joy.
